What is ABRSM?

ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) is an international musical organization. It aims to help people in learning music and good quality production techniques all around the world.

Being hand in hand with royal musical schools globally, ABRSM is active in more than 100 countries. Their examination system covers 35 different musical instruments, singing, theory and music knowledge. Exams are offered in two different categories, theoretical and practical, and divided by 8 different levels by difficulty.

While theoretical exams only test attendant's knowledge basis, practical exams test instrumental performance in addition to that. Those who wants to focus only on performance are advised to consider ARSM as well. Successfully completing all 8 levels is enough to take diploma exams: ABRSM, LRSM and FRSM. The exams take place in many countries all over the world.

How do ABRSM exams take place?
ABRSM exams are offered two times each year. They only take place in officially certified institutions and audited by the ABRSM commission.

Are there any age restrictions?
No, every individual from different ages are welcomed to apply ABRSM certification system.

How to apply?
For Turkey, ABRSM is applicable during October and January. The application fee must be paid before the application. The fact that only original copies of related books can create additional costs.

What is my level? Which level should I apply for?
One can apply any desired level. But, it is advised to get in touch with a certified trainer at least 6 months before application. It may not be as easy as it sounds to self-determine the level of eligibility in music.

Can I apply for diploma by passing an 8th level exam?
There is not a level-wise required order in taking exams. However, a valid certificate of either 5th level of Theory or Practical Musicianship is required to be able to apply 6th, 7th or 8th levels.

How long does the exam take?
Although there is not a specified strict time range, it is estimated as follows:
Preparatory, Step 1, Step 2 – 10 mins.
Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 – 15 mins.
Grade 4, Grade 5 – 20 mins.
Grade 6, Grade 7 – 25 mins.
Grade 8 – 30 mins.
Diploma exams, by order: DipABRSM, LRSM and FRSM - 60 mins.

How does the grading work?
The scale for practical exams is as follows:
0 – 99 : Fail
100 – 120 : Pass
120- 130 : Merit
130- 150 : Distinct
A grade of 110 is required for DipABRSM, LRSM and FRSM exams.
Theoretical exams are graded in scale of 100 points.

Even for the case of failure, attendants are informed in written by the committee.

What is the validity of ABRSM certification?
ABRSM certificates are valid globally. Although it is not accepted as an official document of eligibility by state conservatoires by procedure, any type of ABRSM certificate is a plus in applying musical institutions.

The process of graduation, printing and delivery of the certificates takes around a month.
