Music plays an immense role in everyday life. Some are into music professionally while it is a simple tool to relieve for others. Regardless of your level of connection with it, your taste of music is totally individual.

Although every composition is unique in its own way, musical pieces can be categorized by their prominent elements and characteristics. The technical term for such categories are called "genres". There are almost 300 different categories if we take sub-genres into consideration but luckily, we will only cover well known ones in this post! ?

Here we go:

1 - Instrumental Music

Also can be referred as background music and music without lyrics, instrumental music is as indicated by its name... is purely formed by musical instruments. It is widely used to enhance the effect of certain activities such as meditation, yoga, behind a movie scene or a poem reading session due to its simplicity and no-lyrics structure.

2 - Classical Music

Being born Western Europe, Classical Music is also known as Classical Western Music. It is strictly different from folk music by its rules and elements. Composers like Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart are some of the most prominent figures in classical music.

3 - Blues

Ah! Good old Blues is still alive and well with its 450-year-old history. Rooted in Africa, many Blues songs carry the traces of the story of Africans who have been exiled to America in 17th century. B.B. King, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton are the most known names for this genre.

4 - Electronic Music

Although club music comes into mind when mentioned, electronic music actually has a wider spectrum. With the advanced technology, almost every song we listen to today has some electronic component, which makes them electronic music at some level. But as we've mentioned, electronic music excels in clubs and with its sub-genres like acid, dub, dance, house and trance.

5 - Folk Music

A musical piece is to be called as folk music if it carries traces of a specific geographic location or culture. It can't be defined with strict lines and can be associated with national values, motifs, stories or local accents.

6 - Jazz

Just like Blues, Jazz is rooted in Africa as well. However, brass instruments (e.g saxophone) are more prominent in a typical Jazz piece. It can easily be distinguished by its unique style and still popular in modern day.

7 - Pop Music

Rather than based on musical components, pop music is used to define a specific sound of a specific era. The term "pop" is a abbreviation of "popular" hence as the popular demand changes over time, the sound indicated by "pop music" changes also. Some of the pop figures who dominated their era and next generations are Michael Jackson, Madonna and Bee Gees.

8 - Rock

Rock music differs from other genres by its lyrical contents. A typical rock song has a dissident style by means of lyrical component. It also has sub-genres like electronic music. Hard rock, heavy metal and neo-classical metal are some of the well known sub-genres of rock music.

9 - Religious Music (Hymn)

Although its controversial to consider religious music as a genre, it should be in our opinion. Generally speaking, hymns are easily separable from other pieces by its lyrical content. Varying for each religion or belief system, hymns generally have lyrics that praise a certain supreme creator or refers metaphysical beings like angels or demons.
