Each generation grows up with different musical genres; each decade introduces us to different styles and genres. We have previously published blog post '90s in music , which is a continuation of our blog post about music in the '80s with you this week.

Come, let's all learn what artists, what songs and genres featured in the '80s.

1980s Musical Styles, Bands and Singers

In the '80s, music was all about image. With the advent and popularity of MTV, images accompanying artists became more important than ever. For a decade in music, nothing was extravagant, not even the voice, the fashion, the philanthropy. The 80s reflected the beginning of a period of great income inequality and a focus on well-being in music. Several new genres have also emerged, such as Hip Hop, New Wave and Hair Metal, which influence music today.

Popular Music Genres in The 80s

Pop

Popular music of the 80s was highly prominent at the time, with many successful artists. Artists such as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Tiffany are some of the names that star in the pop category.

Hip Hop/Rap

Hip-Hop / Rap music genre, which is still quite popular today, was one of the new genres that emerged in the 80s and quickly became popular due to the audiences it appealed to. Artists such as Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, LL Cool J, Kurtis Blow, Salt-n-Pepa, Public Enemy, Biz Markie, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T, NWA, Jungle Brothers, Gang Starr were among the most popular names of the period.

New Wave

This genre of music emerged in the 80s and became popular again in the 2000s. Originally inspired by punk rock, it is also a mix of Funk, Disco, Reggae and Ska genres. Culture Club, Duran Duran, Devo, a Flock of Seagulls, Blondie, Talking Heads,The Cars, The Clash, Billy Idol, The Cure are pioneers.

Hair Metal

Hair Metal, considered one of the sub-genres of Heavy Metal, is another type of music that was very effective in the 80's. Guitar tones are a little bit harder than hard rock, and the vocals have a high pitched voice that resembles feminine screams. However, apart from the bands of the period, it attracts attention with its fluffy permed hair, excessive makeup and spandex pants. This situation also caused this music type to be called hair metal. Names like Van Halen, Poison, Twisted Sister, Motley Crüe, Warrant, Cinderella, Europe, Guns n 'Roses, Skid Row, Metallica, Anthrax, Ratt, Pantera, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard, Aerosmith were popular hair metal artists of that period.
